It’s moving day: how to migrate to that new account

Sunday, June 29, 2008 1 Comments A+ a-

With so many of you snapping up shiny, new, ymail and rocketmail addresses over the last few days, I suspect at least a few of you will be wanting to actually use them.

As I mentioned earlier in the week, Yahoo! does not offer an option to merge multiple Yahoo! accounts together. Typically people opened secondary accounts because they wanted to separate different activities, not just to add email addresses, so it hasn’t really been an issue.

If an existing user is unhappy with their old ID, and prefers the newer ymail/rocketmail ID, we encourage migration to the new account (ultimately freeing up the older IDs for others down the line).

You are probably thinking to yourself “Migrate? How am I supposed to do that?”  Well guess what, it’s actually pretty easy.  As a Yahoo! Mail user you can have TrueSwitch do the dirty work.  Think of them as a moving company for your email home.  You provide some info and they pack up your stuff, move it, and even do the unpacking.

They’ll even give you the option of sending a personalized message to everyone in your address book, updating them on your new digs.  Yahoo! Help provides wonderfully detailed breakdowns for Classic or All-New Mail, but if you prefer a jumbo side of pictures with your instructions … I have some for you!

First up you need to login to your new email account and go to the Options menu.  Activate the Options dropdown (in either version of Mail) and select Mail Options.  If you are using New Mail you can even jump a step ahead by choosing Import Contacts.

Once you get to the Options page you will want to select Address Book (Classic) or Contacts Options (New Mail).  Once there you will see an option to Transfer Contacts to Yahoo!

Onto the security stuff.  We don’t want people moving you without your permission, so even though you probably entered your password a few moments before, we ask for it again.

Then we want you to review some stuff from legal and grant permission for what’s going to happen.

Once you have agreed to the terms, you will be asked to provide your login credentials for your older account.  If you take a closer look at the dropdown you will see that there are other options too (should you feel like moving any other accounts over to the new ymail home).

Steps 2 and 3 give you options for which content to move, as well as if you want to notify your contacts of the new address.  Then agree to the Terms of Service and Start Transfer!

After the fancy bar lights up for a few seconds you receive the congratulatory message.  Be sure to remember that the move will take place over the next 24 hours, so if you don’t see it when you login again don’t be worried.  You’ll get a message letting you know once everything is done.

Hope this helps make the transition a little easier!

What Is The Future of Yahoo?

Monday, June 23, 2008 0 Comments A+ a-

There has been enough disappointment to go around when it comes to Yahoo of late. When Yahoo refused the buy-out offer from Microsoft, there was upset. When they subsequently turned around and inked an agreement to run Google ads on Yahoo, it irked shareholders and confused tech pundits. It seems like a complete sell-out and admission that Yahoo can’t sell ads on it’s own. Then we hear about several members of the Yahoo management leaving the company, including the founders of Flickr, the founder of Del.icio.us and others.

image

And where does the focus end up? On CEO Jerry Yang.

Jerry Yang is most likely going to be out of his position as CEO of Yahoo. And he should be. Why?

The stats of Yahoo have not been good under Yang’s leadership. And this fiasco with Microsoft has only served to shed a more intense light on that.

In my opinion, Jerry Yang suffers from emotional attachment. He is one of the founders of Yahoo. He looks on Yahoo as his company and he doesn’t want to see anything he views as bad happen to it. He came in with a strong vision for the company, but practically none of what he said has come to fruition. Instead, we see executives leaving the company and Yahoo trying desperately to keep Microsoft off it’s back - despite it being in the best interests of the shareholders.

It is understandable that Yang, as a founder, has an emotional attachment to the company. But, this can get in the way of doing what is best and I personally believe that is what happened here. The ball was dropped out of pride. Yahoo went with perhaps the worse possible outcome - outsourcing their revenue to their competitor.

If Microsoft wanted to buy Yahoo to be #2 in the search field, they may just have done it anyway. Yahoo’s poor choices means the value of Yahoo has dropped quite a bit. It helps Google by growing their already large piece of the online advertising pie. It helps Microsoft because Yahoo is now seen as a floundering company. Perhaps Microsoft can come in later and now purchase Yahoo at an even cheaper price than they originally offered because Yahoo’s value has tanked so much.
Yahoo Needs To Pick a Market:

Yahoo is a schizophrenic company that has no real product anymore. They dabble in many things, but if asked exactly what the chief product of Yahoo is, few have an answer. They are not a search engine company, despite them sometimes trying to act like one. It seems as if Yahoo is made up of a bunch of independent companies, all doing their own thing.

Yahoo is more of a destination site. A portal, if you will. It is not a search engine and they should probably realize by now that they’re simply not going to compete adequately with Google in that area. Yahoo got it’s start as an online portal - a place where you go and you hang out online because Yahoo did almost everything.

The question is: Can this model survive in this current Internet world? There is now so much competition online that Yahoo blends into the scene now rather than being apparent as a leader.
Yahoo’s Future:

The future of the web is in personalization. It is about connecting people. Search is never going anywhere, but the importance of traditional search is waning as social media and social proof further drive traffic. This is why sites like Youtube, Myspace, Facebook and Yahoo are among the highest trafficked and stickiest sites on the Internet. These sites attract lots of attention, and that allows those companies to collect user information and ultimately sell things to those people.

Yahoo is, perhaps, in a much better position to capitalize on this than Google. Google is awesome at search. They’re awesome at search advertising. But, they are not awesome at presenting content and fostering online interaction. Yahoo is much better at this and I think this is where the future of Yahoo lies.

New email addresses for all my friends!

Thursday, June 19, 2008 5 Comments A+ a-

For many of you this may not be all that exciting (heck, if you are reading the Yahoo! Mail product blog it’s reasonable to assume you have a Yahoo! Mail account already) but for a lot of people out there getting that perfect email address has proven to be a bit of a white whale. Even I had to settle for ymailblog1 because someone had already snapped up ymailblog. Well that ends right now (or actually in the next hour or so), because…
———————————————

What’s Old is New, Just for You

rocketmail

Ever tried to sign up for a new email account, only to find that the name you want is unavailable? We hear you – as the most popular email service in the world, Yahoo! Mail has more than a quarter of a billion users worldwide* – that’s a LOT of email addresses in use already. With that in mind, we’re making millions of desirable email addresses available today with the launch of two shiny new domains: ymail.com and rocketmail.com.

If “rocketmail” rings a bell, it’s because it’s “vintage” Internet. Back in the 90s, RocketMail was one of the very first free Webmail services – Yahoo! acquired it in 1997 and built the first version of Yahoo! Mail based on RocketMail technology. Some of the original RocketMail users chose to keep their RocketMail IDs to show that they had been among the first users of Webmail. Now, like so many beloved classics that are hip again – cupcakes, big sunglasses, Indiana Jones, The New Kids on the Block – RocketMail is back for a new generation to enjoy.

These new domains will offer the same great Yahoo! Mail experience – like unlimited storage, integrated instant messaging, free text messaging, and localized versions around the world. And as always, a Yahoo! email address works for everything across Yahoo!, from checking Mail to using Messenger, Flickr, Groups, Finance, and more. The added bonus is that with these two new domains, you’ll have the chance to land your perfect email address to help reflect who you are – which is what the majority of you are looking for according to a recent Harris Interactive survey.**

So whether your style is brand spanking new (ymail.com), hip vintage (rocketmail.com) or comfortable classic (yahoo.com), surf on over to http://new.mail.yahoo.com/addresses and get that email address you always wanted.

John Kremer
Vice President, Yahoo! Mail

*According to ComScore media metrix, April 2008
** In a survey of 2,035 online adults conducted by Harris Interactive, 56% of respondents indicated they somewhat to strongly agree with the statement that they want their email address to reflect who they are.

Windows Live Mail Client = Easiest Mail Backup Ever?

Saturday, June 14, 2008 0 Comments A+ a-

One widely unknown feature of Outlook Express and the Windows

Live Mail client is how easy it is to backup your mail locally (to which

you can then burn to CD/DVD, put on a USB stick, etc.) Even if

you’re not using Hotmail, you can easily back up any POP or IMAP

account by a simple drag’n'drop to a local folder. You could even

backup Gmail easily using the WLmail client.

See video below for details.

When I Grow Up

Sunday, June 08, 2008 0 Comments A+ a-

Hello !
I've got a nice surprise for you; you probebly heard about the new single of The PussyCat Dolls "When I Grow Up",well,I've got the lyrics and the video just for you.
The First Video:
Just Sound

The Lyrics:

What's goin' you sexy, and you don't care what they say
See everytime you turn around you screaming my name
What's up you sexy and you don't care what they say
See everytime you turn around you screaming my name

(Don't Yall)

Now I got a confession (haha, ha, ha)
When I was young I wanted attention(haha, ha, ha)
an I promised myself that I'd do anything (haha, ha, ha ha)
anything to get men to notice me (haha, ha, ha)

But I ain't complaining
We all wanna be famous
So go ahead and say what you wanna say
You know what it's like to be nameless
When no one know what your name is
Cause see when I was younger I would say

When I grow up I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies
When I grow up I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have groupies
When I grow up,I wanna see me, me on TV, people know me, be on magazines
When I grow up, freshly cleaned, number one chick, wanna step out on the scene

But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it

But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it

They used to tell me I was silly,
until I popped up on the TV (lala la, la)
I always wanted to be a superstar,
who knew that singing songs would get me this far (lala la, la)

I see they're astounded by me, I'm a trend setter, yes this is true
cause what I do no one can do it better
You can talk about me cause I'm a hot 'sup bitch
I see you watchin' me watchin' me
and I know you want it

When I grow up I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies
When I grow up I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have groupies
When I grow up,I wanna see me, me on TV, people know me, be on magazines
When I grow up, freshly cleaned, number one chick, wanna step out on the scene

But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it

But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it

When I grow up I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies
When I grow up I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have groupies
When I grow up,I wanna see me, me on TV, people know me, be on magazines
When I grow up, freshly cleaned, number one chick, wanna step out on the scene

But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it

But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it

Yahoo! Improuvments

Saturday, June 07, 2008 2 Comments A+ a-

Lately,Yahoo! was trying to fix several problems with her mail, and to know more about that and if you are a yahoo!Mail user here's how they can help you.
Ryan posts in the official Yahoo!Mail blog :

Earlier this week I posted about issues some users have been experiencing when trying to retrieve email from external accounts within Yahoo! Mail. I’ve been checking with folks internally and have pulled together some additional information for you.

Recently we made some changes to how external account retrieval works. Most notably we added SSL functionality (enhanced security technology), which many users have been clamoring for. We are also taking steps to improve spam blocking for messages that are being retrieved from these external accounts, by running them through more aggressive filters. Unfortunately we encountered some unexpected problems that lead to server errors or processes timing out for some users.

A fix rolled out over the last 3 days that should have resolved the problem for many users. However, we are aware that there are still outstanding issues that are causing problems for other users. The appropriate teams are on the case, and have identified the problems, but are still working on the fix.

Some of you have reported persistent issues here on the blog (or via email), but given that the earlier fix rolled out gradually over the last few days, it would be helpful to know who is still having issues. If you are still experiencing problems today please drop me a line at ymailblog1[at]yahoo.com, and I’ll pass your details along to our engineers. These examples should aid them in solving any remaining problems.

Please be sure to include:

  • Yahoo! ID (even if you are emailing me from that ID, it’s good to confirm)
  • Which external email provider(s) you are having issues retrieving from
  • If you use SSL to retrieve from your external provider(s)

We apologize for any confusion, and for the frustration this has caused. I will continue to post updates as more information becomes available.
